Think back to the late nineties. Remember how expensive laptops were back then? If you weren’t ready to take out a second mortgage on your house, you could forget getting a good laptop. Today, things have changed, and a cheap laptop is, well, a dime a dozen.
Today, times have changed, and you can get a laptop for about as much as it would cost to take your family out to a really nice restaurant, or stay a night in a swanky hotel. The technology is a little older, and it’s the nature of technology to become cheaper the older it gets.
With that in mind, here’s where to look for it…
Laptop Sales
This one is quite obvious. The people who sell computers are always slashing prices simply because everyone’s making laptops these days, but only a few really hog up all the sales. So the end result is a ton of great computers rotting on store shelves because they didn’t have as strong a marketing campaign as their competition.
Geek Buddies
Everyone has a friend or two who’s always upgrading and updating their laptop, someone who absolutely must be at the very peak of technological excellence, even though all they’re really doing is sending some emails and playing internet checkers on the darn thing! When this buddy of yours is ready to upgrade again, see if they wouldn’t mind selling you their old unit for more than they’d get on a trade in value, but less than you’d have to pay buying it somewhere else. It’s a win win.
Used Laptops
Just be careful going this route. Used laptops typically need a little refurbishing if you don’t know that the person who sold it to you took good care of it. You might have to spend a couple extra bucks fixing it up, so make sure you get a great deal. Just buy through reliable resources. The want ads MIGHT get you a great deal, but they’re not exactly the best around when it comes to the matter of accountability.
eShopping
Another no-brainer. If you want to give them all a test run before choosing one, try them out at the local computer shops, but then go home and look and see where you can get’em cheap. The local shops know they can charge whatever they want since they’re the only shops in driving distance. Online, prices are more competitive.
Mildly Outdated Rigs
Outdated doesn’t mean obsolete, it only means that there’s something fancier on the market. A two year old laptop, for most users, will typically perform just as well as the newest laptop out there. They’re always just plain giving these older rigs away, so take advantage and get a great computer for way less than it’s worth!
