There are a number of people out there who could use a touch screen laptop to get ahead in school or at work. Many of them probably didn’t even consider such an option when buying their current laptop and it is fair to say that a majority were not aware such an option existed. But for some, the added functionality of a touch screen laptop would really make a difference in their day to day productive life.

There are two varieties available with similar technology. The tablet PC, true to its name and form is a solid piece of touch screen that does not come with a keyboard and mouse. The user interacts with a stylus directly onto the screen. There is, however, the option of connecting a wireless or USB keyboard or mouse and most tablets come with the drivers to recognize most standard devices.

The more popular forms look like standard laptops until you open it up, and rotate the screen 180 degrees. The swivel screen allows the laptop to convert from laptop mode to tablet mode by turning the screen and folding it backwards.

Standard controls in touch screen include flipping through media, resizing photos, moving objects, and launching applications. Software that are designed to recognize such features allow you to draw pictures, diagrams, or write handwritten documents, notes, or even emails.

The only problem with such a design is the hinge of the screen. Actually, there are two weak links in the system. Aside from the hinge is the face of the screen itself. Despite a protective layer, the screen is still prone to wear from regular use.

Fortunately for us, manufacturers are working on ways to improve durability in both departments. Also, the accuracy of recognizing the touch points is improving immensely.

Since the problems are hardware designs, it can be very difficult and expensive to fix. An extended warranty is recommended and make sure it covers replacement parts.

In the end, a touch screen laptop is a good investment for many people where it would help them get work done and get ahead in school or work. It is nice to be able to draw a diagram or take notes without having to whip out a notebook and flip through pages.
