Remember that old saying, “back in the good old days?” Why can’t we stay in those “good old days?” I do not want a laptop computer! There are people in my family though, who hope I will think otherwise.
I’m simple. Apparently though, that does not work for my grown children. They feel their mom needs to stop being “technologically ignorant.” After much quarrelling, I finally agreed to their purchasing a laptop for me.
When I see the UPS truck pull into my driveway, I have to say, I was not happy. Taking the package from the delivery man, I slowly turn to enter my home. I go to my sewing room and sit to open the box.
Packaging, bubble wrap and directions fell out as the new laptop computer faced me. Wow, I literally heard the “reek reek reek” of that movie with the large butcher knife and the shower curtain, as my terrified hands tried to open this contemporary disturbance.
I was hyperventilating and could not understand why. “How can I do this?” I said aloud to myself. “I am just a country girl. I do all the tomboy things and then some, what can I do with this thing!”
I carefully pushed the opening latch, lifted the lid and was faced with a blank, black screen and a keyboard. I realized, this does not seem as threatening as I had thought.
All of a sudden, I thought of something even more horrible than the laptop computer. I could hear the evil little thing laughing at me! I turned my eyes to see the glowing little devil!
My hands shook as I grabbed those directions and yes, they were intimidating! All the letters of the alphabet jumped before my sight! I saw no words only meaningless gibberish! My brain was aching! My eyes were dry! My temperature was rising!
My hands trembled as I reached for those directions and yes, they were daunting! All the letters of the alphabet jumbled themselves before my sight! I could not see words only meaningless garbage! My eyes watered, my temperature got hotter, my brain hurt!
I wanted to scream, run, throw, spit, cry or anything to stop the turmoil inside me! How was I going to learn to use this scientific demon which I allowed to enter my home! This laptop computer could definitely be the death of me!
I could hear the faint ringing of a phone. When I first got my cellular phone it was difficult for me, too. It was evil to me in the beginning. Then eventually, I grew closer to it and lost my fear. Maybe, that would happen with my laptop computer.
“Mom?” I heard the voice of my eldest child. “Did you get your new laptop computer?” “Are you excited?” I did not know what to say. I certainly did not want to disappoint my offspring. They were only doing what they thought was best. I started to speak but, was cut off.
“We will be down this weekend to help you learn how to use your gift. I remember how much you hated your cell phone, in the beginning. Don’t worry. You will be an old professional at it in no time. I love you. Bye.”
Maybe, just maybe, I can become friends with this laptop computer, in the long run.
