How To Install Laptop Memory

If you continuously use your laptop, you will find that one day, you will have a full memory stored with the data that you have saved and with the programs you have installed. It could get pretty frustrating especially if you are in dire need of installing a certain program, or saving a big file, but could not because there was not enough memory to do so. Fortunately, there is a way to solve this and it is by upgrading your laptop memory or installing additional memory. By doing so, your laptop’s performance will definitely be improved.

The memory is a big contributing factor in the performance of your laptop computer. It will closely work with the main CPU to do its job. Without the memory your computer will not function at all. With a little memory space left, your laptop may still run but it will be sluggish. There might even come a point in time when some software applications will not run properly when memory is low. When this time comes you have to resort to upgrading your memory to gain back speed and better performance.

It is important to check the amount of memory that your laptop currently has before upgrading or installing new memory into your laptop. You can easily do this by clicking on the Start menu, then choose Settings, Control Panel, System, General Tab.

Having identified the type of memory that is fitting for your laptop, the next thing is to go out there and do the actual purchase. There are different online stores that offer laptop memories. The rule of the thumb if you want to get the best bargain is to research widely. If you are the adventurous type, you may want to explore the stores that sell used memory devices.

Installing your laptop’s memory does not need a computer technician. You can do it yourself. Before doing anything, you will need to check what the maximum amount of memory that your laptop can handle. This information can be found in the owner’s manual. In the manual, you can also find out other information such as how many memory slots your laptop holds, as well as what type of memory you need and its speed.

After this, you need to locate the panel used to access the memory module; in most laptops, it’s located at the bottom of the laptop. If you cannot find it, then refer to your laptop instruction manual. Remove the screws and the access panel.

In some laptops you can actually just add a new memory module to upgrade but in many others, you really have to take out the existing one and replace it with the new one. Adding a new module will be easier – all you need to do is to insert the new memory carefully into the empty slot. If you were to replace an existing one you have to take out the old one, which is a bit tricky sometimes, you would usually see a latch that you have to pry out so you can remove the module.

After everything is inserted make sure that it is tightly fastened. The next step will be to put all parts back into its proper places and tighten back those screws. If everything is back you have to boot up your computer and check the memory space, if the module is properly inserted then the computer should reflect a bigger memory size on the screen.
