    Maps

    Your built-in iPhone Maps application can be hard to beat. It’s free, it’s simple, and it gets the job done. Through Maps you can get driving, walking, and public transit directions. You have access to map, satellite, and street view. While it’s not the same turn-by-turn phenomenon that’s packed into Android, it gets you where you need to go and also works pretty well as a replacement for the (figurative) yellow pages. Despite having tested several different turn-by-turn navigation apps, I always find myself coming back to Maps. It’s just easy to use and it works. [Pre-installed]

    MapQuest 4 Mobile

    If you do need some vocal assistance in your navigation, you can pay a lot for great GPS apps. (We’ve always had an affinity for Navigon on the premium side.) If you don’t want to pony up, though, MapQuest 4 Mobile is free and does a pretty nice job. Of course you could opt to pay for a slightly more refined option, such as the $.99 MotionX GPS Drive, or something more social, like Waze, but MapQuest 4 Mobile is a great solution for turn-by-turn navigation on your iPhone. IQ Routes tracks the time it takes actual users to travel alternate routes, and uses this information to calculate average route speeds. This lets you choose the fastest route each time, rather than having to rely on calculations made using only route distance and speed limits.

    You also get spoken street names and turn-by-turn directions using text-to-speech technology–a formerly high-end feature that is now becoming available in more mid-range and entry-level GPS units. As with other TomTom GPS devices with text-to-speech, you can choose among various voice options including some generic foreign accent voices and a few well-known celebrities.

    TomTom has pioneered a feature known as Map Share, which is fully operational in this navigator. Map Share is essentially crowd sourcing of GPS mapping. Maps, street info and other data are constantly revised with new information sent in by TomTom users, so map and software errors tend to be corrected quickly. As with all TomTom automotive GPS devices, your unit will come with pre-loaded with maps and over 7 million points of interest.

    A final advanced feature is the unit’s Advanced Lane Guidance system. This helps avoid dangerous last-minute maneuvers to stay on the intended route. The wide GPS navigator screen shows realistic images of the road ahead, with clear lane diagrams and flashing arrows indicating where the car should be positioned with regard to upcoming freeway exits or turns. There is even a fuel price tool which will let you find the lowest gas price among nearby service stations.

    The TomTom 340S delivers a lot of high-end features for an entry-level GPS. You can buy newer and much more expensive models and, unless you are a pretty demanding and experienced GPS user, not notice much difference in overall quality. Reviewers have praised this unit and deservedly so: it remains an outstanding value. Consider a factory refurbished unit for even greater savings, or simply check for lowest new navigator price on a retail site like Amazon.

The headline simply can’t reveal how many small details were revealed in Stephen Totilo’s incredibly extensive interview John Koller for MTV News. In the interview Koller revealed that all upcoming PSP games developed by Sony will take advantage of the system’s full 333MHz speed, with no negative impact to battery life. Other accessories for the US include the upcoming GPS peripheral, which is currently being “tweaked” with an expected release in the next 10-12 months. The PSP camera “may get a spec change” before coming to America — but the TV tuner will never make its way to the US.

    Bringing downloadable games to PSP is one of the next things to tackle for Sony. echochrome was originally meant to be a downloadable PSN game for PSP, but it became much larger than anticipated. “It was initially going to be a download-service-only game,” Koller said. “We changed it to a UMD because it’s a very rich game. That’s where their mind is. They’re developing that kind of game.” Thankfully, other downloadable PSP games are in the works. When can we expect them? In the next six to eight months.

    This new range of product is made of 4 devices: XNV-L77BT, 770BT, L66BT and 660BT, with screen sizes varying from 6.1-inch to 7-inch.

    “We are delighted that Sony has selected TomTom as their navigation services supplier in Europe”, says Giles Shrimpton, Managing Director, TomTom Automotive. “This endorses our position as the leading location and navigation solutions provider. Combining the audio and video know-how of Sony with our navigational expertise has resulted in an excellent product range. Moreover, as the technology incorporates a flexible hardware design based on standard interfaces, it allows for easy updates in the future – a huge advantage in the automotive industry.”

    This new Sony navigation system will come with wireless connectivity in six European markets (France, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Portugal and the United Kingdom). This connectivity will allow TomTom’s real-time LIVE services including HD Traffic, speedcam information, live weather updates and Google local search.

    Along with these LIVE services drivers also get access to IQ Routes (providing historical speed information) and Map Share (to update the map data in near real-time).

    This new line-up of Xplod in-car AV centre will be available from November 2010, pricing is still unknown at this stage.
